Length: One page, double-spaced, no more than 300 words
In the Introduction to the textbook Ways of Reading, the editors say that the essays in the book have given their readers a “dramatic experience, almost like a discovery,” in which readers “suddenly saw things as [they] had never seen them before.” Walker Percy’s essay is also about seeing things, or at least attempting to see them. In a one-page response essay, identify a passage in Percy’s essay that, when you read it, gave you the opportunity to see something you hadn’t seen before. Explain what you understand the passage to mean and what about that passage affected you. If you can, consider how Percy’s writing constitutes the kind of “mediation” for which he is offering a critique.
